La montée aux cellules [The Climb to the Cells], La Petite Roquette, charcoal on paper 1943

Champigny-sur-Marne, Musée de la Résistance nationale © MRN
"This is a perfect symbol of La Roquette. What an effort it took to climb up to find the gloomy environment of the cell, every day, every morning…"
Illustrations from the book France Hamelin, Dessins et peintures de prison [Drawings and paintings from prison]. The exhibit held at the Musée de la Résistance nationale, November 2001. France Hamelin was preparing an agrégation [advanced teaching degree] in philosophy when she was arrested for resistance-related activities. She was imprisoned during 1943 and 1944.
